Airport transfer costs in 50 cities, ranked
In July 2026 we checked the fare of every airport-to-city transit option in 50 world cities — 171 options in all — against the transit operators' own published fares: 168 of 171 verified against official operator sources; 3 flagged † as estimates/unconfirmed (how we verify). This page normalizes them to US dollars and ranks them. Every number links back to the full city guide it came from.

Key findings
- The extremes (both verified): the cheapest ride into town is MEX → Central Mexico City on Metro Line 5 + Line 1 for $0.28; the priciest door-to-door ride is NRT → Central Tokyo by Taxi (fixed-fare) at $189.21.
- Under $1: 7 cities get you downtown for under $1 (2 of them on estimated fares†).
- Most expensive public option: EWR → Manhattan at $17.25 (AirTrain + NJ Transit).
- Median across all 50 cities: $2.95 for the cheapest public option.
- Biggest taxi premium: Mexico City and Istanbul (estimated†) both land around 50× — door-to-door vs the cheapest public option. Central Mexico City: $14.50 vs $0.28 (51×). Central Istanbul†: $45.08 vs $0.92 (49×). † = fares we could not confirm officially.
- Smallest gap: Central Johannesburg at just 1.2× — Gautrain costs almost as much as ride-hailing.
- Priciest door-to-door ride: NRT → Central Tokyo at $189.21 (Taxi (fixed-fare)).

Methodology
Fares come from our 50 airport transit guides, each verified in July 2026 against the operators' official fare pages and timetables — the sources are linked in every guide (full methodology). "Cheapest public option" is the lowest-fare rail, regional-rail, or bus option we list for that city; "door-to-door" is the lowest-fare taxi, rideshare, or car option. Where an operator publishes a fare range, we use the midpoint. Local fares were converted to USD with one open.er-api.com USD-base snapshot (Thu, 09 Jul 2026), held fixed so the numbers are reproducible; the exact rates ship with the dataset. Rows marked † use an estimated fare that we could not confirm on an official operator source; the guide explains why. Fares are per person, one-way, standard adult tickets.
