Airport transfer costs in 50 cities, ranked
In July 2026 we verified the fare of every airport-to-city transit option in 50 world cities — 171 options in all — against the transit operators' own published fares (how we verify). This page normalizes them to US dollars and ranks them. Every number links back to the full city guide it came from.

Key findings
- Cheapest ride into town: Central Cairo — CTA Bus 356 from CAI for $0.30. 7 cities get you downtown for under $1.
- Most expensive public option: EWR → Manhattan at $17.25 (AirTrain + NJ Transit).
- Median across all 50 cities: $3.00 for the cheapest public option.
- Biggest taxi premium: Central Istanbul, where door-to-door costs 55.0× the cheapest public option ($45.08 vs $0.82).
- Smallest gap: Central Johannesburg at just 1.2× — Gautrain costs almost as much as ride-hailing.
- Priciest door-to-door ride: NRT → Central Tokyo at $153.83 (Taxi (fixed-fare)).

Methodology
Fares come from our 50 airport transit guides, each verified in July 2026 against the operators' official fare pages and timetables — the sources are linked in every guide (full methodology). "Cheapest public option" is the lowest-fare rail, regional-rail, or bus option we list for that city; "door-to-door" is the lowest-fare taxi, rideshare, or car option. Where an operator publishes a fare range, we use the midpoint. Local fares were converted to USD with daily ECB-adjacent rates (Thu, 09 Jul 2026); the exact rates ship with the dataset. Fares are per person, one-way, standard adult tickets.
